Reimagination of the World: A Critique of the New Age, Science, and Popular Culture .
Published in Paperback by Bear & Co (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Clarity At Last: "Reimagining" the New AgeDavid Spangler and William Irwin Thompson "reimagine" the New-Age in this clear, sometimes shocking discussion. Based around the forums of two major New-Age conventions in 1988 and 1989, their visons and interpretations of countless aspects of what is commonly referred to as the "New Age" are the kind of candid, honest appeal to humanity that is so rare in this oftentimes overly-metaphysical genre. While the numinous aspects of reality are not spared (they fully discuss astral projection, channelling, and the like of modern "crystal worshippers"), what is refreshing is the humor and human-ness which accompany their insight. Being a reader who was raised with the concepts of past-life regression and karma as a moral and spiritual guidepost, I have often struggled with the paradoxical nature of the new-age movement. Seeming inacessible, lofty, and pretentious, this emotionally indulgent attempt at enlightmennt sent me searching Christianity for answers. Needless to say, I arrived at the discovery that both crystals and Christ can be limiting. Thus, my finding Spangler's and Thompson's exegesis on their comprehensive experience as both founders and dissentors of the new-age movement was fortunate; their ideas will engender a synthesis of thought both full of enlightenment and common sense - a combination rare in the often-megalomaniacal realm of spirituality and religion.

Responses to 101 Questions on the Mass
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (November, 1999)
Average review score:

A "Must-Read" for Liturgical Commissions and RCIA TeamsIn a style reminiscent of the late Scripture scholar, Raymond Brown, SS., whose "101 Responses to Questions on the Bible" shaped many adult education/faith-sharing groups, Kevin W. Irwin, Professor of Liturgy and Sacramental Theology at The Catholic University of America, provides an equally formative book on the Mass in the Roman Catholic Church. After a brief introduction, Irwin divides his book into ten sections ranging from "Introductory Background and Terminology" necessary before answering any questions about the Mass and Liturgy in general, to a concluding section on the Eucharist and Daily Life. Interspersed in his decalog of explanations, Irwin provides a methodological development of the Mass as he answers a myriad of questons with the precision and scholarship that endear him to both his students and his readers. Beginning with the various liturgical roles necessary for the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy, Irwin details the change from the "Tridentine" Mass to the novus ordo Missae of Paul VI. He presents each structural element of the Mass, from the Introductory Rites, and continuing with the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the Communion Rite and Dismissal by his clever answers to questions ranging in their perspective from the curious to the historical. Chapters VIII and IX, on Music and Eucharistic Discipline and Theology, respectively, present two issues which are critical not only for an understanding of the ritual action of the Mass but also for a full, active and conscious participation in the mysteries being celebrated on the part of those who gather as a community keeping the memorial command of Jesus. Although the entire work exudes a depth of understanding of the nature of the Liturgy, Irwin makes a particular contribution to contemporary liturgical spirituality in chapters IX and X, with his theological insights into the questions of the "real presence" of Christ in the Eucharist, intercommunion among Christians, and a lex vivendi that demands both a communal and individual response to go forth from the Mass to "love and serve the Lord." This book is easily understood by those who have some foundation in Liturgy as well as by those who seek to deepen their knowledge of the present reform of the Roman Liturgy. It is especially helpful as a reference for RCIA coordinators and team members. As such, it deserves to be found on the shelves of every Diocesan Office of Worship, in parish libraries and resource centers.

Very informative for sellers AND buyersThis book explains how to look for physical defects with the house, environmental concerns, toxic substances on the property, faults with the title, proximity to floodplains and earthquake faults, termite and pest damage, safety hazards, conditions of financing, and so on. The reader can also use this book as a "know how" about what to look out for when purchasing a home and the tricks a seller might use to cover up some defects and faults. This book is very well written and easy to understand. A perfect reference book.

Unique NovelSewerelf is unlike any novel you've ever read. Every time you think you've got it figured out, it veers in another direction. This book has everything: fantasy, science fiction, even aspects of a literary novel. It reminds me of Franz Kafka in the twenty second century. The only flaw I can see is that it's too short!

Shakespeare's Globe Playhouse: A Modern Reconstruction
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (December, 1975)
Average review score:

For the Shakespear Enthusiast (or those doing a report)Irwin Smith has taken a lot of time and research to present to us the great details of the Globe that many people do not know about. This book was very handy doing an english thesis on how plays would have been preformed on stage. If you are even remotly interested in Shakespear. I would definatly recomend the book. All of the to scale drawings of the playhouse really help to bring it to life.
This is just an example of the easy and smooth process that the book teaches. It is fluid and packed with valuable materials.
